Key Brain Regions

Prefrontal Cortex

Nucleus Accumbens

Amygdala

The Dopamine Trap

Addictive behaviors flood the brain with dopamine—far more than natural rewards provide. Over time, the brain adapts by:

  1. Reducing dopamine receptors (tolerance)
  2. Decreasing baseline dopamine (withdrawal)
  3. Strengthening cue-behavior associations (triggers)
